School Visits Newcastle

Gosforth Park Nature Reserve is a fantastic resource for children to learn outdoors about the natural world. From Key Stage 1 and upwards they can get hands-on with nature and have fun exploring a variety of habitats and ecosystems.

Gosforth Nature Reserve is currently open to members only

Gosforth Nature Reserve is currently closed to non-members in line with government advice regarding coronavirus. We apologise for any disappointment caused.

This peaceful 1km x 1km wildlife refuge has a shallow lake, wetlands and mixed woodland which can be explored from hides, boardwalks, and nature trails. The reserve has a population of roe deer, red squirrel, fox and badger and otters are sometimes seen even though it is close to Newcastle city centre.

For Key Stages 1 & 2 our fun Wildlife Detectives programme allows you to choose from a menu of curriculum-based outdoor learning activities to suit your teaching requirements, group size and time at the site.

For Key Stages 3 and 4, BTEC’s and A/AS Level the reserve is an excellent site for teaching practical science such as sampling techniques or carrying out practical conservation work. We also welcome individual student projects.

We are keen for schools and other youth groups to visit the reserve in order to help young people learn about and experience the natural world. Thanks to a grant from DEFRA we are able to offer free school visits to the nature reserve until 2021.

The links below provide more information about our activities and can help you to plan a visit to the reserve.

To have a chat, tailor your visit or make a booking for your school or group please call 0191 208 2790 or email

You can also combine your visit to the reserve with a trip to the award-winning Great North Museum: Hancock where you can learn about the natural world indoors.

We had a fantastic time. The leaders were excellent and the reserve was amazing.
