Join Dr Alison Cutts for six interactive evening sessions as you take up botanical art from the very beginning
Course tutor: Alison Cutts
Course length: 6 weekly sessions, Wednesday evenings 7.00-8.30pm
Course structure: This is an online course held via Zoom. Please ensure you have the right system requirements for accessing Zoom before booking, as we have a no-refunds policy.
Course cost: £45 / £40 concession
Over five interactive online sessions, this gentle introduction to botanical drawing will take you from observation to relaxing into drawing what you see, and gradually introduce techniques for making your drawings more accurate, detailed and lifelike in three dimensions. Written reference material will be provided and the demonstration videos will be available to watch again after class on the NHSN Website.
We will start with simple plant specimens and as your confidence and experience increases, move through more complex material, towards drawing a whole plant.
The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience in other types of drawing. It is not intended as a masterclass for scientific artists. Each session will include a short drawing practice and participants will be encouraged to draw independently between the sessions, sharing work (anonymously if preferred) and questions for feedback and discussion.
Basic art materials will be needed; just a favourite pencil or pen and some drawing paper is enough to get started. You will also need to collect plant material each week from your garden or local surroundings – we will be working with common, easy to find plants and the requirements are very flexible.
You will need a comfortable chair, a flat surface to draw on and a computer or mobile device to join the sessions, which will be delivered by Zoom.
Course attendees will receive a Zoom link ahead of the first session. If you are new to Zoom, you can find more information about using it at their website here.
N.B. You must be an NHSN member to attend this course. You will be asked to provide your NHSN membership number when registering. Not a member? Learn more about NHSN membership.
