Join us for an introduction to spotting, identifying and recording our local butterfly species.
About this event
Join us for a friendly introduction to butterflies of the North East, where we'll look at butterfly spotting, identification, and recording. There's a wide diversity of species to spot locally!
We'll start with a short introductory chat in the Field Studies Room, where we'll go through common butterfly species, how to identify them, and good places to look for them.
We'll then go for a relaxed walk around the reserve, particularly looking at the wildflower meadows, to see which species we can spot. Along the way we'll record our sightings, contributing to valuable wildlife data while enjoying time outdoors.
This is a great chance to learn more about local butterflies. Whether you’re completely new or already have an interest in wildlife, everyone is welcome.
Come along, take a gentle stroll, and enjoy discovering the butterflies around you. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Event length: 1 session, Sunday 16 August, 1pm - 3 pm (approx)
Event structure: Short chat in the Field Studies Room followed by an outdoor session
Event Cost: £5
Meet at: Entrance to Gosforth Nature Reserve, Salters Lane, Newcastle. W3W: certified.parent.mouse
Accessibility: We will be walking approx. 1.5miles, the path can be uneven in parts. Sturdy footware is reccomended
Please note that parking can be limited at Gosforth Nature Reserve, and public transport is recommended wherever possible. Public parking is available on 'Gosforth Park Way', a short 5 minute walk away
