April and May are the months when the majority of our breeding residents and returning summer migrants start setting up their breeding territories and begin to sing. With the present restrictions we may not be able to roam far and wide to look at birds but we can spend the time productively learn more about our birds around our homes.
With this is mind, we will be looking at learning the main songs and calls of the local birds but also trying to interpret their meanings and how they use them to communicate important information both within their own species and to their mates but also to the wider bird community through alarms that are recognised between different species.
During the course it is hoped that members will choose a particular bird that is breeding and try to find out as much as possible about it i.e. Where it is nesting, the size of its territory and calls and songs it makes. As we nearly all now all have mobile phones, we have the ability to both record the bird sounds and even actions. If members of the course wish to share these or discuss what is happening then they can email them to me and I will incorporate them in the presentation for the next week and try to interpret the behaviour of the birds.
