Geology as a formal subject originated in the 17th and 18th centuries. In what is known as its Heroic Age, great figures (and greater egos) made amazing discoveries about geological processes, the development of life and the antiquity of Earth. As knowledge increased, it became obvious that the Christian Bible could not be an accurate description of Creation. This presented a threat to the power and prestige of the church, which re-acted strongly. Learn about the great figures of this fascinating period with Derek Teasdale.
