Meet NHSN’s New Student Naturalists

Recently, we welcomed Johnny Bullar and Evie Longhorn as NHSN’s new Volunteer Student Naturalists. Find out more below.

Both of the student naturalists have hit the ground running, already taking to the outdoors with their first Wildside Walk alongside NHSN’s previous student naturalist- Lekshmi Vijay. Enjoy their trip around Havannah Nature Reserve in their YouTube video below.

Evie Longhorn

Evie has recently finished her second year at Northumbria University, studying Environmental Sciences. Throughout her course she has discovered interests in the fascinating science of geology, species identification and the anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems. As her student naturalist role begins, Evie is excited to learn more about the natural world whilst spreading awareness about the climate crisis we face. She aims to do this by learning about the wildlife of the North East and showing others the beauty of it. Evie aspires to have a big impact on biodiversity and would love to play a role in wildlife conservation. She is grateful for the opportunity the NHSN has provided her, and is eager to learn more about the ins and outs of natural history to aid her progression towards her future aspirations.

Johnny Bullar

Johnny is studying Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at the University of Reading. He has particular interests in animal behaviour research, species identification and modern conservation techniques and policies. His aim for his time over the next year with the NHSN is to expand his knowledge and experience in these areas, along with gaining new and exciting passions within the field. He has been an NHSN member for a number of years now and has worked closely with us. Specifically, writing blogs for the NHSN website and performing citizen science research of COVID-19’s impacts on the Gosforth Nature Reserve for his External Project Qualification while sitting his A-Levels. He is looking forward to spending more time at Gosforth Nature Reserve to start a project on the behaviour of badgers within the reserve, attend the Wednesday work parties and begin to learn how to be a volunteer ranger.
