About this Event
The Redcar shore exposes the oldest Jurassic strata in the North-east. Dominated by featureless shales of the Redcar Mudstone Formation, separated by richly fossiliferous ‘death assemblages’ composed largely of Gryphaea arcuata (Devil’s toenails) along with other bivalves, ammonites, belemnites, gastropods and crinoids (many of which can be found on the beach). There are occasional moulds of large (30cm+ diameter) ammonites. When conditions are suitable, a large expanse of submerged forest is exposed at the north end of the beach where tree stumps and logs (mainly birch) are preserved in a 7 000 year-old peat layer lying on 17 000 year-old boulder clay.

This walk may include slopes, rocky areas and areas of uneven or steep ground.
