From the great whin sill to myriad quarries and fossil-rich coastal sites, we are fortunate to have fascinating and world-class geological formations in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and County Durham.
Many NHSN members are passionate about exploring this fantastic natural resource and regularly take part in field trips and activities organised by NHSN’s Earth Sciences Specialist Group.
NHSN also owns a fantastic collection of rocks, minerals and fossils as part of its collections in the Great North Museum: Hancock. As well as visiting the museum, you can explore some of this collection online, click here.

Karl inspires the study and enjoyment of geology through field trips, education courses and talks.
Karl is an active member of the Open University Geological Society and has organised around 200 geological field trips in Northern England for their local Northumbria branch over the last 10 years.
Brenda Turnbull
Earth Sciences Co-Coordinator
Brenda works to promote the study and enjoyment of geology through field trips, talks and informative articles.
Brenda is the Chair of the Geographical Association, Tyne and Wear Branch, and runs their Twitter feed (@GA_Tyne&Wear) to promote Geography, Geology and Earth Sciences.
