Could you help us give visitors a warm welcome and support the smooth running of NHSN’s winter natural history talks?

About this Opportunity

We’re looking for friendly, welcoming volunteers to be the face of NHSN’s winter natural history talks. By joining us, you’ll become part of a passionate team that greets visitors, inspires others about nature, builds connections, and helps continue a tradition of natural history talks stretching back almost two centuries.

As an NHSN Talks Volunteer, you’ll help talks run smoothly, create a warm and inclusive atmosphere, share resources, and make sure our speakers receive a friendly welcome to Newcastle.

This role takes place on Monday evenings between October and March at Newcastle University’s Curtis Auditorium. Doors open at 6.00 pm, with talks finishing by 8.00 pm. Set-up begins from 5.30 pm and usually finishes by 8.30 pm at the latest.

You can choose how many talks you volunteer at, and you’re welcome to attend as many as you’d like throughout the programme.

Main activities

  • Welcoming visitors
  • Making sure speakers have everything they need
  • Sharing NHSN resources and materials

  • You’ll be passionate about the wider work of NHSN

What we’re looking for

No specialist knowledge of nature is required – just a friendly smile, enthusiasm for natural history, and an interest in meeting like-minded people.

What the role will do for you

  • You’ll have the chance to spend time regularly with like-minded NHSN members and naturalists from across the region.
  • You’ll meet new people, make friends, and become part of a diverse team passionate about nature.
  • You’ll connect with naturalists from all walks of life, sharing in their knowledge of the natural world.
  • There will also be opportunities to get involved in other activities, from events to citizen science projects.

This is a wonderful chance to support a historic programme of talks and contribute to the wider work of NHSN. If you are passionate about nature, we’d love to hear from you.
