About this Event
The lower Derwent valley passes through Pennine Coal Measures strata consisting of sandstones, shales and coals. Within the shales are ironstone nodules, often in bands. Historically, these ironstones were used in local ironworks, although other sources such as Weardale and Sweden were used subsequently.
We will also travel to Shotley Bridge to view a short section of the sandstones alongside the river. Finally, we will visit Thornley Woods to examine the enigmatic tufa formations in the river.
