Heritage Lottery Fund enables natural opportunities

Thanks to grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a group of young people from Newcastle recently enjoyed visits to local natural places. The teenagers experienced pond dipping and bug hunting at Scotswood Community Garden, birdwatching and small mammals at
Gosforth Park Nature Reserve, and rock pooling at St Mary’s Island. Thanks to Society Members Brian and  Veronica who shared their enthusiasm and knowledge, the group saw wildlife as small as aphids, as lively as common shrews and as vocal as Common Terns.
The young people asked some fantastic questions and showed how observant they could be, connecting their outdoor experiences with an indoor tour of the NHSN Archives with
Archivist June.

Clare Freeman, Director, shared “We are looking forward to welcoming our final group from West End Youth Enquiry Service next week and shall be sad when this HLF project comes to an end later on this year, as the young people have been such great company to work with
– visit the museum in September to see their artwork  inspired by the project in the Galleria on the first floor”.
