NHSN’s Friday Talks are returning, with one small difference…

For well over a century, NHSN has held informative natural history talks that share research, news and exciting discoveries from within the realms of environmental science and conservation. In modern times, our talks have been held each Friday between October and March in Newcastle University’s Ridley Building, attended by naturalists and nature lovers from across the North East passionate about birds, botany, earth sciences and many other subjects.

This year, due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19, bringing people together to hear talks in person is not an option, but we want to ensure that you do not miss out on your regular Friday talks. That’s why, this year, we’re pleased to announce a new series of digital talks for you to enjoy at home. Delivered by leading experts from across the UK, these will be published on Youtube each Friday at 7.00 pm, meaning that in the spirit of our regular talks, you can watch ‘live’ at the usual time or later at your own convenience. You can also share your favourite talks direct with friends and family.

NHSN members will receive advance notice of upcoming talks in your weekly e-news and can expect to enjoy a diverse range of subjects, including beavers reintroductions and botany at Weardale. You can also look forward to special talk covering NHSN’s first citizen science project, the North East Bee Hunt, and hear how your hard work and records made a difference for bees this summer.

Many NHSN members care deeply about providing a platform for younger researchers to share their work, demonstrated by the attendance at 1829 Talks over recent years. To continue to support and promote the younger generation of environmental scientists, our 1829 Talks will also return this year. These will be released at 18.29 each Friday, directly ahead of our main talks. With a line-up that includes urban moths, forestry, Roseate Terns and deep-sea exploration, we hope you will join us in supporting the young speakers sharing their work this autumn.

Look out for further information about this years Friday Talks very soon, including a full programme of the talks you can enjoy between October and December. Please subscribe to the NHSN YouTube channel to receive a notification whenever we share a new video.
