Join NHSN's Earth Sciences Group to explore the fascinating geology of the Haltwhistle Burn

The gorge cut by Haltwhistle Burn provides excellent exposures of the Lower Namurian (Carboniferous) sedimentary strata including, limestone, shale, sandstone and coal. Many features of the deltaic environment in which the sediments were laid down can be observed.

Essential equipment:

Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, lunch. The path is over rough ground in places with a stile to cross. 3 miles in total.
